How Long Do Dental Bridges Last, and Other Important Questions

A dental bridge

If you have one or more missing teeth and are searching for a natural looking replacement, you may benefit from a dental bridge. Bridges are prosthetics that secure to two nearby, healthy teeth (abutments) and close the gap in your jaw with crowns that are known as pontics. They are ideal for people missing between one and four consecutive teeth; however, the more pontics in your bridge, the easier it may be to damage it.

If you’re considering restoring your smile with the help of a dental bridge, here’s some more information about what you can expect from them.

Different Types of Dental Bridges

There is more than one kind of dental bridge, each with their own pros and cons and suitable to every budget. Here are some perks of each.

Traditional Bridges

Traditional bridges are the most common types and are usually made from ceramic or porcelain fused to metal. They are cemented into place and must be removed by your dentist. These prosthetics last up to ten years; however, they typically survive between five and seven years.

Removeable Bridges

Removeable bridges clip onto your teeth on either side via metal clasps and are made of either metal or acrylic. The patient can easily remove the prosthetic themselves for cleaning and at bedtime and can then put them back in to function during the day.

Implant Bridges

Implant bridges are just like regular bridges, except they are permanently attached to your jaw via a dental implant. Only your dentist can remove them, so just like dental implants, they can stay in place for eating and cleaning. Because they are secured via several permanent posts, they provide greater biteforce than traditional bridges, and they have the benefit of being more affordable than individual dental implants. While the posts themselves can last a lifetime, you will likely need to replace the prosthetic after about 20 years.

Caring for Your Bridge

Caring for your dental bridge is easy. In fact, it requires no special care or equipment. Just brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day as usual and be sure to visit your dentist twice a year for your semi-annual checkup and cleaning.

Remember, if you’re missing more than one consecutive tooth, a dental bridge may be right for you. Speak to your dentist today about the different types available, and which would be best for your individual mouth.
